| Where is the Manitoba Model Forest? Created in 1992 by a partnership of interested groups, the Manitoba Model Forest is located 90 minutes by automobile northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The 1,047,069 hectare research area is bordered to the east by the Manitoba-Ontario provincial border and to the west by Lake Winnipeg. The community of Manigotagan is located at the northern border of the region and the community of Pinawa to the south. This boreal forest region can be reached via provincial highway 59 or provincial highway 11. A popular recreational destination, the region has over a century of timber harvesting history. For the last seventy years, the area has been the principal supply area for a major newsprint mill. In addition, mining, commercial and sport fishing, and tourism are a part of this vibrant boreal forest community. |
